We have just had a short discussion (wouldn't call it an argument) in Gameware about a sentence and now I'd like to hear your opinion about it.
The story is, that a guy came and wrote in English only and linked an image that was later marked as fake, etc. As some other strange errors appeared in his posts, I thought he's not who's he tells he is. The guy was asked why he was on a Hungarian forum at all, speaking English only. His answer (and the sentence mentioned above) was:

Idézet

To tell people about Age of Empires 3, I only look at this exact thread, and reply in this exact thread :lefety:

I think this sentence has no sense. IMO what he wanted to write is something like "To tell people about AoE3 I simply looked at this particular thread and posted here."
Another opinion in the Gameware thread was that he was using simple present to express that he's used to come and post here, and the sentence should be translated to something like "Csak ebbe a topicba szoktam benézni és csak ehhez szoktam hozzászólni."
What do you, people with deeper and maybe wider English knowledge, think of it?
Hallgatok, hogy ne rongáljam tovább a tudásom halvány látszatát. (*)

You're right. That guy is neither an englishman, nor American. And not a native speaker of english, that seems certain. At least, this is my educated guess from that single sentence you quoted.

edit: wrongly used word. :)

Anyway I still don't understand why he should use Simple Past expressing that. Can you or someone else explain it grammatically?

In my opinion Simple Present is used to express repeated actions or habits. If someone comes to see the hottest threads everyday it is the tense that should be used.

(You're right, it isn't an argument. I'm just wondering.)

His posting was a single act in the past. Definetly Simple Past.
The guy doesn't post regularly to that thread and obviously doesn't read it. Remember, he didn't know that the image had been discussed before.
Considering he wanted to express that he visited that thread regulary, he should have placed "only" after "thread" like this: "I look at this exact thread only" (btw I still don't like the useage of "exact" here).

Idézet

Over the last four years, Peepolykus (I'm going to call them Peeps from now on because Peepolykus is hard to type) have developed - ''honed'' - a refreshing and ridiculous style of comic theatre which has won them rave reviews all over the world, from Southampton to Singapore and Dorking to Delhi.

They love 'em in China (''I rarely laugh in the theatre but with this show I was forced to surrender" South China Morning Post) and also in wee bonnie Scotland (". . . the three-man team have once again given birth to a dazzling kaleidoscope of nano-second perfect timing, audacious irreverence and monstrous stupidity."  Scotsman).

Idézet

Peepolykus
15., 16., 17., 18., 19. December
Két produkció a Peepolykus társulattól (John Nicholson, David Sant és Javier Marzan), akik egyben ez idő szerint az Egyesült Királyság legünnepeltebb nemzetközi hírű színházi társulata. Előadásaikban a fennkölten képtelen bóhóckodás keveredik a verbális helyzetkomikummal és az elképesztően pontosan időzített, mozgásos komédiával. Angol nyelven!

Once I saw them mimicking a fly (including hunt for it and its noise), later a 10minutes show around strairs. They're simply great.
Now we know the dates but miss the place... Could you write about it?

PS Isn't it "attend to"?

I missed that bit, sorry. It will be performed in Merlin Theatre (Budapest).

No, I think not. Attend to means "looking after something", while attend roughly means "visit". AFAIK. :)

And now if you could just explain what the letters AFAIK stand for I'd be eternally greatful.  :) I think I'm behind in my chat abbreviations...  :smoker:

It's more like an internet acronym, which stands for: as far as I know.

That's all right. Like, for example, I don't like to mix english and hungarian words. Some people use english words in their hungarian communication, but I'm not very fond of it.

BTW (means by the way, by the way :D), if you're looking for abbreviations or acronyms, google is your friend.

Favourite: Reading
Authors: Philip K. Dick, Arthur C. Clarke, J. R. R. Tolkien, Douglas Adams, Isaac Asimov, George Orwell and others

I'd write "Favorites" in this context, especially that you have more favorites.

Lock, Stock and the Two smoking Barrels

The title is Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

but we're close to finish it

finishing it, IMO

Minor mistakes, but I thought it is worth mentioning.

I'm not that amateur!  :) I've been using the net before there even was a "net". Started out writing on the bulletin boards of Prodigy (which was an online network like Compuserve and AOL, before AOL joined the WWW) with a 2800 kbps modem. Aaaah, the good 'ole days... When kids where kids and McDonalds only served one size of fries...  :)

Yeah, and a nice typo I have too, (where - were). Gonna go see if I can still edit it... Happened in college all the time. Even if I ran the spellcheck through there were always other typos not picked up by it. Once the teacher returned it saying, that it will be an A as soon as I correct all the typos.  :D
