It's "next to" and "left of" something.  :)  Sorry...

Right. :) First I wanted to write next to, but then I thought I'd make it a little clearer by stating the relative position (this being "left" of course), but it seems the "to" word was left there by mistake. Thanks for correcting.

You can always count on me to butt in.  :)

BTW,  :) have you discovered the wonderful world of Pratchett?

Tried to, several times. But I never got the hang of it. Maybe I was too young at the time. So I might give it a shot again.
Right now the only fantasy for me is Lord of the Rings. And in terms of comedy, the Hitcheiker's Guide to the Galaxy (it's not a fantasy I know, but still). The latter I like in almost every form. Almost. The film wasn't that bad, but neither was it very neatly directed in my opionion. On the other hand, the BBC radio show is just hilarious. You gotta hear it to believe it. In fact, you can do just that: http://greylodge.org/gpc/?p=53. On this webpage are the original series, but also the new ones, which cover the whole story.

Anyway I still don't understand why he should use Simple Past expressing that. Can you or someone else explain it grammatically?

In my opinion Simple Present is used to express repeated actions or habits. If someone comes to see the hottest threads everyday it is the tense that should be used.

(You're right, it isn't an argument. I'm just wondering.)

In all honesty, I think Gazdi is a better judge than you in these matters, and I think he's right. So if the guy left the forum out of shame then it serves him right for making up stories.

You have to be patients with Pratchett. The first two books in the series I didn't like much, but the rest were a blast.  But you have to have a healthy dose of cynicism, a touch of morbid humor, and be able to deal with a lot of silliness. And you have to have a solid background in world history, literature and religion. Otherwise you won't understand the subtle humor.

Pratchett rules!  :respect:

I tried to get throu LOTR, but never made it past half of the first book. Read the Hobbit though.

I read Hitchhiker's guid, but never got through Restaurant at the End of the Universe or any of the subsequent novels. Somehow it's just not my kind of humor. It could be, but it isn't.

Geez, one gets appreciation from whom he doesn't count on it. Thanks, WW.
BTW, it's gazdi, not Gazdi. This is not a name but a nickname only, and it looks much better in small caps for me.

edit: back to on-topic, what I've read recently in English are Asimov's Foundation books. They are great and still very easy to understand, even for me with not much more than shallow English knowledge. I'm sure I've missed some details, but am pretty familiar with the main storyline and most of the side threads. I enjoyed it, really.

We simply forgive you. :)

I know you play internet games a lot... that's why you learn these incorrect phrases like "dunno" (don't know) and so on. These "english-speaking" servers are extremely not recommended for language learning. Just have a look at Hungarian servers! Sometimes I can hardly understand what some people want... but I'm Hungarian, believe! ;)

I'm not that amateur!  :) I've been using the net before there even was a "net". Started out writing on the bulletin boards of Prodigy (which was an online network like Compuserve and AOL, before AOL joined the WWW) with a 2800 kbps modem. Aaaah, the good 'ole days... When kids where kids and McDonalds only served one size of fries...  :)

Jesus, I have only 512kbps internet access. :p ;)

Forgive me for picking at you. :)

We all know you're right, but we all know also that this won't change the way this society changes. While proper spelling is "l00za" and being another brick in the wall is a must for kids, we will just look with eyes wide open and don't try to understand. Are we this old?

Should've been bps, right? I get these things mixed up sometimes. I couldn't give a rat's ass about hardware as long as it works. My field is software. Or so to speak. I don't wish to exaggerate, I just play around with it.

I'm sorry to hear that you didn't like the Guide, maybe try the radio programme version, avaible on the aforementioned link.
LOTR is great, I feel a little (just a little, not much) pride in myself because I read it all in english, in fact, I haven't read the hungarian version at all! And the Hobbit is on my bookself too, but I have yet to find the mood for it. Later, maybe.
I wasn't a very avid reader of books in the summer, unfortunatlely, I usually read quite a lot books in that period of the year, but this summer it was just two short story collection by Philip K. Dick and a Jane Goodall book, The Reason for Hope.

So you and Steve Jobs are like-minded. I didn't mention it in my last post, but I also read a very nicely written biography about him and Apple software. Very entertaining and an interesting read too!

Old? I'm only 21, you're 29. Perhaps we're old...

Look, there are some people who doesn't feel sorry about the time spent on reading books and creating valuable sentences. I don't want to say it's a problem of the upcoming generation. It isn't. It's the former generation's "mistake". Parents and teacher should apply new conditions shown by the world. They don't want to or can't, I don't know.

After all: lots of youngsters are taught to take care about the writing they hand out. Lots of them aren't. But it is noticed only in the case they do a mistake. The right ones are never on the podium.

I always give credit where credit is due.  :) And your English is just fine.

I think the only way to be on topic in this topic is to write in English. The subject can be anything.

We're not old, it's just the world that's changing so fast we can't keep up. Gives you a feeling like you've been around forever at 29. (Or 27 for me.) I dunno though,  :D sometimes I like to use these "words" too.

Perhaps. Although I dare say he knows his way around hardware as well.  :) Now you've got me interested, I'll be reading about him. Probably a lot more sympathetic than the monkey known as Bill Gates.  :D

Yeah, you see one or two of those some time to time and they mean hope. ok, hope is a bit strong word for this, but still, I'd like to see more. Yes, much "atype" about nothing. :)
But let's see this from another point of view, look at it as a kind of social evolution. Such evolution has always existed, just think of how you speak (or spoke) to your grandparents and how your parents do (did). In this environment, it's all ok and, what's more, needed. I step aside and let the mass go on, if complaining a bit now and then (edit: WW, this answers your post too :)). For those who want to stop this: "Parents and teacher should be shown the new conditions applied to this new world."
I tend to be idealist so I stop now. A new aim of mine got expressed by your words, put a right one onto the podium, if got the chance.
