Az AMDzone-ról származik a hír...Had ne kelljen kommentálnom...
ZDNet has a interview with Dell, and of course the AMD question comes up. Why in the world would a computer company in Austin use a CPU from a company that has a Fab in Austin and makes CPUs? That is the crazy world we live in. Heck, several CPUs are designed in Austin, and Dell doesn't use a one of them.
ZDNet: And on the 64-bit front in general?
Marengi: Come take a look at our benchmarks any time. We've got 32-bit multiprocessor systems that are beating the 64-bit stuff hands-down. But when 64-bit's time comes, Itanium looks good.
I find it disturbing when Dell is taking the Apple road of performance claims. Where are these performance numbers? Why hasn't ZDNet asked that question? Looking at the OCUS benchmark AMD takes the top two spots with their 64 bit CPUs. The highest ranked Dell box with a 3GHz P4 is ranked 22nd. 200MHz won't close that gap as the Athlon 64, not even Opteron is 87 seconds faster. Well how about SPEC CPU2000? Surely Dell is faster there with their systems. Well let us see. Athlon 64 FX51 and a 3.2GHz 1MB L2 cache Xeon. That should be a good comparison.
Advanced Micro Devices ASUS SK8N Motherboard, AMD Athlon FX-51 1 1376 1447
Dell Precision Workstation 650 (3.2 GHz Xeon, 1MB L3 Cache) 1 1274 1333
Well it appears that Dell's fastest single CPU setup can't beat AMD's. With AMD's superior multiprocessor capabilities thanks largely to HyperTransport a comparison of SMP boxes will only favor AMD more. This is fact and is not in dispute. Well what does MS say with their Exchange benchmarks. These are for 4P and 2P boxes. Hmm, Racksaver with a 844 based 4P comes in second place. Dell comes in 5th with the Xeon. On the 2P front the Dell box is only 8 spaces back of Racksaver. Keep in mind these are some older marks that have only been updated as of June 2003. I hope they do update these benchmarks as they are quite useful.
Anyway these are the only results of AMD vs Dell systems I could find listed in our archives. If anyone else knows of published benchmarks I can use with direct comparisons please do send them my way. Also stay tuned for what the December issue of PC Gamer has to say about Athlon 64 FX, and read the ZDNet story to also see what Dell says, or doesn't say about Yamhill. Oh, and Marengi, I want to come and see those benchmarks. I'm about 10 minutes away. Sure I haven't set foot inside Dell in almost 4 years, but I remember the way. Dell has the benchmarks, so cough them up for the press to see. In fact that is a great idea. A Dell press day. Sign me up. Update: Having worked in Dell IT I know how the e-mail addresses are made from your name. I've e-mailed Mr. Marengi explaining that I would like to see these benchmarks. I'm assuming he got it, or his assistant since it did not bounce back.
