AMD Demo R600 Crossfire on Quad Core Barcelona Setup

EETimes and TheRegister separately reported on ATi R600 Crossfire sightings at the San Francisco launch. AMD has publicly demonstrated a Barcelona system with a pair of 200W R600 cards running in Crossfire mode which is capable of hitting one teraflop. The article mentioned that researchers at Stanford were already writing supercomputing applications for R600 and that R600 uses 320 multiply-accumulate (MAC) units which could imply 40 vec4 per GPU and ~800MHz clock.

The reasons for R600 delay cited by Henri Richard: "R600 is doing very well and there's a reason we're going to launch it when we're going to launch it...I'll take the blame. Launching Direct X 10 chipsets piecemeal was not welcome with AMD's OEMs, and would not give the best economic value for the firm, despite the clamour for new kit from hardcore gamers and computing enthusiasts." Our sources told us that X2900XTX will only be available in limited quantities when launched.

R600 Clocks Higher Than 800MHz

Hardspell is reporting that R600 GDDR3 card uses 12 layers PCB while the R600 GDDR4 card uses 12-16 layers PCB. The silicon for R600 only reaches A13 revision and there are no A14, 15 or 17 revisions. According to them, currently all the ATi R600 benchmarks out there aren't real and R600 core clock is not lower than 800MHz. VR-Zone has learned about some updates on R600 availability. Apparently R600 GDDR3 will be available in early May while R600 GDDR4 will be available in mid May but in limited quantities. We will see some R600 demos at CeBIT but behind doors.

AMD Demonstrates Accelerated Computing Solution that Breaks Teraflop Barrier

At a press event in San Francisco, AMD demonstrated a "Teraflop in a Box" system running a standard version of Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional that harnessed the power of AMD Opteron™ dual-core processor technology and two next-generation AMD R600 Stream Processors capable of performing more than 1 trillion floating-point calculations per second using a general "multiply-add" (MADD) calculation. This achievement represents a ten-fold performance increase over today's high-performance server platforms, which deliver approximately 100 billion calculations per second.

"The technology AMD demonstrated today is just one example of how the 'New' AMD is changing the game for our industry," said Dave Orton, executive vice president of visual media business at AMD. "Today, teraflop computing capability is largely reserved for the supercomputing space. But now that 'Teraflop-in-a-Box' is a reality, AMD can deliver an order of magnitude increase in performance."

Today also marks an important milestone on the road to Accelerated Computing, AMD's vision for specialized "co-processors" interoperating with x86 microprocessors to provide efficient and flexible acceleration for specific applications. Platforms based on the same technology found in the "Teraflop-in-a-Box" demonstration should benefit a wide range of scientific and commercial applications, including energy, financial, environmental, medical, scientific, defense and security organizations around the world by equipping them with the intensive computing power they require to conduct research and deliver solutions significantly faster than previously possible.

What is a Teraflop?

In the supercomputing field, "flops" is an acronym meaning FLoating point Operations Per Second, a measure of a computer's ability to perform floating point calculations. A teraflop is one trillion floating point operations per second. Stream processing technology helps raise the bar in this regard by leveraging sophisticated, massively parallel processors, generally used for 3D graphics applications, to solve real-world problems.

AMD To Demo R600 Using DICE's Frostbite Engine

According to MyDrivers, AMD is going to use EA/DICE next generation DX10 games to demonstrate the power of R600 architecture over at the upcoming Game Developers Conference 2007. From the GDC website, ATi is going to give an overview of the rendering systems and architecture of DICE's new Frostbite engine powering the upcoming Battlefield: Bad Company game. ATi will also discuss graph-based visual shader authoring, unified rendering & shading back-end (PC, Xbox 360 and PS3) and procedural shading and texturing techniques, including examples from the latest AMD/ATI graphics demos.

R600 cards are showing up in working order. ZDNet showed a picture of a lone OEM ATI R600 yesterday. Today for you we have pictures of two ATI R600 cards working in unison, but rather than graphics, they are pounding away showing off their prowess in a Teraflop Stream demo (MADD results shown below).

Certainly it is good to see ATI's next-gen graphics cards showing up even if it is not pushing pixels. We have been able to confirm some other R600 news that is not good. ATI is stating that a SINGLE R600 high end configuration will require 300 watts of power (+/-9%) and a DUAL R600 "CrossFire" high end configuration will require, as you might guess, 600 watts of power (+/-9%). Compare that to a single GeForce 8800 GTX that will pull 150 to 180 watts. Add in a CPU to that mix and you overtake most power supplies’ peak ratings on the retail shelves today.

Also many have been worried about the size of the new R600 video cards. ATI is stating that 345mm / 13.6" will be the required space to fit the cards in a case. (Yes, the retail version will be somewhat shorter, or at least that is what is told to us even though we have yet to see one.) This figure is the card's 335mm physical length plus 10mm to properly install the card. A GeForce 8800 GTX is just under 11 inches longs while the 4 GPU 3dfx Voodoo 5 6000 comes in at 11.75 inches. Certainly if you have an R600, it looks like you will be able to claim having the longest in the room….
